Message of Solidarity to the 14th CITU All India Conference

Dear Comrades of CITU,

On behalf of the Portuguese workers and trade unions we represent, we extend to CITU’s leadership and to all delegates attending the 14th National Conference, our warmest and militant solidarity, in a moment in which you are gathering in Kannur, Kerala, the representatives of your almost 6.0 million members.

We know that you are meeting in a crucial moment for the defence of the interests and yearnings of the Indian workers and people, so severely hit by the neoliberal policies of your government.

We recall your brave, historic and enormous February “All-in - One-Unity” General Strike, on the basis of a Ten-Point Charter of Demands, against anti-labour and anti-popular measures, participated by millions of workers.

We are well aware of the leading role played by CITU, not only in this struggle but in leading the Indian workers in the building of a society free from capitalist exploitation, with peace and social justice.

In Portugal, we are also fighting intensely against ultraliberal policies adopted by our government, under the command of an international “troika” of the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the European Central Bank, which is leading our country into deep recession, growing unemployment and poverty. We have been staging many demonstrations, protests and massive strikes and at the moment we are intensifying trade union and popular struggles.

This is indeed a time for workers of the world to unite, to resist and fight the onslaught of big capital that, using the pretext of the crisis, is severely targeting workers’ rights and living and working conditions.

The class-oriented international trade union movement is leading the struggle, with courage and determination. Let us fight together for the end of exploitation, for a society of social progress and justice!

We convey to CITU and to Indian working class our full and militant wishes of great success in your Conference deliberations.

Fraternal Solidarity
